Today, other than editing my resume which was left aside since mid March, due to the school work piling up and needing to clear, I started to think about my life. Other than school and home, I didn’t go out and work and experience the working life. I don’t seem to have any amazing things about myself that wows people. Somewhat, my grandmother’s discouragement of that me failing my interviews is really daunting me, troubling me. Well, failing interviews is kinda part of the learning process to grow, to get a job.. So I shouldnt be taking my grandmother’s discouragement to heart, but for some reason, I can’t really do that..

I’m kinda back in the “panicking” mode of I must find a job currently, perhaps due to the fact that some of my friends (a few, though) have job offers already and will be starting work soon. But, I’m also not forgetting that me and my friends are also searching for a job – I am not alone. With the NUS JobsConnect coming soon in late May, I’m getting ready to get a job with my improved resume. Hopefully, everything will just turn out right.

As a Chinese saying always goes, “失败是成功之母” (failure is the mother of success) and a quote from 1 of the professors in uni, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, I will become stronger in my job hunting process.

Thinking about the past and now, I kinda realised that I’m working (or trying to) harder than before, perhaps because I’m graduating soon and thus, I will miss my schooling days. (And with that, I wouldn’t get to be as relaxed as now I guess.) I guess I’m seizing everyday that comes by

Tomorrow would be the last day of my Hip Hop classes, which I really enjoy a lot despite the muscle aches ;p Really a stress reliever.. Maybe I should have tried to relieve some of the stress through this “dancing” methods long ago (and slim down at the same time )

In other news, I kinda performed all right for my Malay ;p (and you can see my 2 entries below which is for my Malay project!) Let’s hope everything goes well…

(I always use it to translate English words into Malay.)

Walau bagaimanapun, saya lebih suka memakai kamus saya sebab ia ada Cina terjemahan.
(However, I prefer using my dictionary as it has Chinese translation.)

I was a fresh ‘A’ Level holder then. ‘A’ level results was released just a while ago, and I was glad that I passed my General Paper. Ready to go for a university that I will like to do as a major, I stepped into the Career 2005 & Education 2005 and walked around. Somewhat, I was very very interested in game designing and animation, because I myself was a gamer . I chose SoC in the end because 1) I like IT since young and 2) there’s Communications and new media where I somewhat can achieve what I wanted – game designing and animation. So, I was quite happy (and still am) when I got into SoC..

Before I got myself matriculated, I went for the Computational Biology application and interview because I like the idea of computing and biology together. Also named as Bioinformatics, I think it will be a crucial field in the future, thus I got Comp Bio as my major (and at the same time, trying to pursue as much media related stuff as possible). As Comp Bio was quite new back then and I was like the 2nd batch of Comp Bio majors, none of my seniors could tell me what’s in store for me for my major.

I joined the Freshman Orientation Week then and learnt a lot of stuff from seniors – from course stuff to job finding for the future. Many would say it’s not that important to plan for your job finding yet as a freshman, such as learning to write your resume, networking and making more friends.. but I’m lucky to know these seniors which really offer good advice. Especially on the networking part, where making more friends would “increase” your chance of getting the job you want.

How applicable, I must say! (Thankfully for computing folks, a new language/software learnt/used is an extra skill in hand, to be flexible accordingly )

I talked to my dad about the job hunting process recently, and it seems that he and my mum doesn’t really rush me to “find a job asap or else” kind of attitude.. even so, I still have the rush to find a job soon. I just don’t want to be regarded as a useless person anymore – who sits at home and waits for a job to drop from the sky for me. Perhaps this is just a part of the growing process, where a typical girl who only keeps studying and relaxing finally has to join the others – in the working world.

Other people that I’ve chatted with did encourage me to stay optimistic, because not being even a third class isn’t the end of the world. I myself think it’s okay to fall down sometimes, but it’s important that you get up after falling down. Yes, I may not be as good as others – with great Honours, with so many CCAs and high leadership positions, with so many skills, etc. But I’m really willing to learn – if a chance is given to me, that is.

In other news, hip hop dancing has been really a sweaty event and I’m still trying to practice my steps.. kinda funny to see myself dancing in the mirror.. and I kinda made a few friends over there, although I barely knew their names. For Malay classes, I must admit it’s really fun – no matter lecture or tutorial. I made friends with quite a bunch of girls and a few guys and now we sit together in lecture and tutorials. The classes were full of laughter, rather than the normal module lectures/tutorial where it’s pretty much monotonous. Perhaps this is the beauty of Arts modules..

Now that 6 weeks of surviving is done for now, it’s time to move on and revise for my tests.. and do stuff that I should have done ages ago..

Fortunately, I’m still glad there’s that leadership position and UROP that added a pinch of spice to my resume, else my resume would be really empty. You might ask why I didn’t join a CCA and then stay there for 4 years and blah blah – well, I think I needed the time to cope with my studies. Being a Computational Biology major isn’t easy already and I have been already forewarned in 2005. I treated it as a challenge and I still keep at this challenge although my results have been pinpointing that there’s already something wrong. For the internship, part-time jobs argument.. let’s just say I’m lazy (and would rather be playing computer games)

Of course people will tell me it’s okay not to have a 3rd class and working experience, but with the current economic situation, everything can be hard to say. My cousin, who has graduated last year, has been searching jobs since the start of the economic crisis and till now, she is still jobless. It’s not surprising that I’m getting worried whether I’ll get a job by the end of 2009.

The quest for a job now can be difficult and full of obstacles, but I know someday and somehow, I’ll get a job.. Hope I’ll get it soon so that I can stop worrying – for now.
